The system pictured here is a typical residential water disinfection system rated at 4 GPM.
It includes two 10" pre-filters: a 5 micron sediment filter that removes any
particles larger than 5 micron (in comparison,
a human hair is approx. 75 micron across), and a carbon filter that
removes taste and odour from the water (especially, it removes chlorine from tap water and hydrogen sulphate,
pollutants and colourisation from well water). In the adjacent UV reaction chamber, bacteria and viruses are
subjected to powerful UV rays that damage their DNA, preventing their proliferation and thus inactivating the
pathogen.
This system is appropriate to disinfect all the incoming water (point-of-entry) to a typical house with up to 4 inhabitants. Larger systems are available, and many special features can be added to the standard setup (such as extra filtration for
special contaminants, e.g. iron and manganese removal, arsenic and flouride reduction, hardness reduction, and many more.)
